Kind of reminds of the myth of the police arresting prostitutes “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.” There are other moron entymologies I’ve heard over the years but only this one comes to mind right now.

I’ve got one.
Homosexuals are called “faggots” because these little bundles of brushwood were what were used to burn them at the stake.
This is despite the fact that the term began to be used in its modern sense only in the 20th century, at which point it had been some centuries since sodomites were burned anywhere.
And they had rarely, if ever, been burned in English-speaking countries.
We hanged ‘em, just like witches.
