My take on the Tamir Rice shooting

Tamir Rice's father should be absolutely ashamed of himself for not teaching his son that playing with guns (which have been doctored to look real) in public and not listening to policemen with real weapons will get you killed. I realize that his father, Leonard Warner, has a criminal history, but that should only make him more ashamed that he hadn't taught his son simple survival skills, and what a mistake it is to play chicken with the cops.

Someone should do a quick anecdotal study about how many of these kids involved in these high-profile shootings (Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, etc.) have the same last name as their father and mother. It seems like they all come from broken homes, which would seem to be a much stronger indicator than race.

Some people have asked me to weigh in on the Tamir Rice shooting, being that I live in Cleveland. Obviously there are a lot of details which might not be hitting the national news yet, e.g., Cudell Rec Center is a hot-spot for crime. Here's my take on this sad and avoidable incident.

I am NOT on the side of the cops on this one-

They shot him out their car window seconds after driving up 4 feet away from him, on the grass, while he was sitting on a park table.

Why were they driving on the lawn to get to him?

If they thought he had a gun, wouldn’t it be better AND SAFER to park 50 feet away, shine the light on him, and assess the situation?

They had to have their guns out and the window open as they pulled up- this does NOT sound like good police procedure: “Hey there’s some guy- I think he’s got a gun- pull up next to him so I can see”

If you look at the video- the car pulls up- the kid stands up, and seconds later he is on the ground dead.

You'll notice that the bystander and a passer-by could tell it was merely a child playing with a toy gun.

It was only the "highly-trained" cops that started blasting away before they could figure out what was going on.

I liked this comment on this article: "The real tragedy is that the folks who run the Plain Dealer continue to blame the police officer instead of who's truly to blame: the idiot who altered the toy gun to make it look like a real gun and the other idiot who let the child out of the house with a realistic looking gun. Those are the two people who need to be prosecuted and sent to prison." I could buy that.
