How much of that is a difference in income, a difference in the education system, and/or a difference in the cultures belief in a need for education?

I believe it's the difference in income of the people of that time.

Many 10 year olds were working jobs themselves just to help put food on the table........which thankfully led to today's child labor laws.

That was NYC, kids in the heartland were helping their parents work their farms and if lucky, there might have been a small one room schoolhouse nearby that they could attend if their parents didn't need them on the farm.........

My mother said she would save all the pennies she got, from either returning bottles or getting a penny from her mom to buy candy, which she said she didn’t but put it aside for the pool.

Said it took about a month or so to get the money.

She said the pool was all done in pink marble. The floors and the room also in pink marble. She said it was very beautiful and she felt wonderful when she went there.

Only once a man came down and swam in the pool. He was actually a resident of the hotel. She said she was very annoyed at him for being there, lol.

He left her alone and she left him alone.

Actually, on a nice summer night you can sit in Washington Square Park and play chess or read a novel under the street lamps. Still beautiful after all these years.

A few years ago my kid sister's youngest was considering attending NYU so we made a day trip to check it out.One point that the student guide made was that the NYPD precinct that covered most of that area had the lowest crime rate in the city. But even with that a coward like me would be nervous anywhere in the city after dark.

NYC is safe after dark. You just need to know the neighborhoods. NYU owns the entire area and its very nice. I take classes there all the time and love it. The food trucks are outstanding.

That’s lovely. I wonder if, looking out her window at night, she saw the moon and wondered what it would be like to be able to fly there? Dream your dreams, little one, and don’t be in a hurry to grow up... Beautiful post!
