Semitic means "of Shem" and did not originally refer to language, although Hebrew was the first semitic language, before others learned it and allowed their versions to degrade. The false claim that semitic originally refers to language comes from recent linguistic activism initiated by anti-Israel Europeans and Arabs. Arabs are, for the most part, not of Shem. Ishmael, who was only one of them, had a mother descended from Ham.
