Vatican to Offer Haircuts, Shave, Showers to Rome's Homeless

The Vatican will offer homeless people in Rome not only showers but also haircuts and shaves when new facilities open next month, the head of Pope Francis' charity office said. The Vatican announced last year that it would provide shower facilities in St Peter's Square for homeless people. Bishop Konrad Krajewski told the Italian Catholic newspaper Avvenire on Thursday that it would also offer haircuts and shaves when the services start on Feb. 16 in an area under the colonnade of the square. Krajewski, whose official title is the pope's almoner, said barbers and hairdressers would volunteer their services on Mondays, the day their shops are traditionally closed in Italy. They had already donated chairs, hair-cutting instruments, and mirrors, the newspaper's website said. Krajewski came up with the idea of building showers in St. Peter's Square last year after a homeless person told him that while it was relatively easy to find places to eat at Rome charities, it was difficult to find places to wash. He immediately received the pope's backing for the shower project and then expanded it to include haircuts and shaves.

I hope this doesn't turn the Square into a squalid shanty town. Homeless people generally are homeless for a reason.

This is the true work of the Church. Those that give and those that receive will both receive a blessing.

This is the "God will provide" bit that the church teaches....

What's with this guy? Rome doesn't have homeless centers?

It’s interesting how poverty has changed. For 99% of human history the destitute were such mainly by outside forces such as infirmity, birth defect, famine, war, etc. But now so many are destitute through simple desire to not work. Used to call them layabouts and slackers. Now we just call them homeless along with the truly unfortunate as a catchall term.

Why stop there? Why not give homes to the homeless right inside the Vatican? The papal apartments should do for a start.

I wonder if His Holiness has seen Luis Bunuel’s great film parable, VIRIDIANA?

The homeless are almost all mentally ill. Thanks to the Supreme Court and the Leftist movement, it isnowillegal to forcebly intern the mentally ill. They are left to their own devices and that device is destructive self medication with booze and dope. As for poverty. It still exists and a tour of Mexico City, Jakarta, New Deli and even some parts of Appalachia and Inner city America would bring new appreciation to the fact that we still have a ways to go until we eliminate true need.

They may as well go all the way and breed with the homeless.

IMHO this will not end well. A good and decent thing to do but hard core homeless seem to have issues.

A good haircut, shave, and shower will improve the physical health and buoy the spirits. This is a good program if well administered.

Less filth and better appearance will benfit the homeless and everyone else.

You did read that the problem was finding food, rather finding a place to wash.

Need presented, loving service provided.
