Missing from the story: the “caucasian couple” just ordered desserts, ate quickly, and left while the (apparently) black couple dawdled over their meal, never asked for the check, and only received said check when the Maitre’d got tired of them tying up one of his tables.
Or maybe they thought the black folk were big spenders and might keep on spending if they didnt close out the table.
