In business marketing we did a section on how racial psychology drives a lot of racism in advertising. Case study was the adverts run for Kool brand cigarettes, which target blacks.
The ads featured a black man and white women smoking cigs, usually in an upscale bar setting and positioned to show that they were attracted to each other. On the other side was an annoyed-looking black woman. The following messages were being sent:
If you’re a black man, smoking Kools makes you attractive to white women.
If you’re a white woman, smoking Kools makes you more attractive to black men.
If you’re a black woman, you better start smoking Kools, or you’ll lose your black man to a white woman.
The racial manipulation involved in just one ad is incredible. Andthey wouldn’t be doing it if it didn’t work.
