While I believe we need a strong military, I do have reservations. First the founding fathers feared a standing army in times of peace as a threat to freedom. Second even Eisenhower warned about the dangers of the military industrial complex. Third, when the military was filled by draft, it had a huge socializing and uniting function that brought about a fairly homogeneous set of societal values in this country.

Yes, we need a strong military to deal with a dangerous world, but some approaches to gaining that military are better than others.

We are not at peace. The stuff happening in the Mid East is just the beginning.
