46 year old brony here (I'll just watch one episode, see what the fuss is about...). The typical brony is a straight, nerdy 20 year old college kid. I've been to several brony meetups and they are awesome, creative and often very nerdy people. And yes, among the hordes of MLP inspired artists there are those who like to draw naughty pictures of ponies. WARNING: do NOT under any circumstances image search "clop". Just don't. But this is the ugly fringe of of a massive fandom. If you want to understand this weirdness this is probable the best article I've seen written about it:
