5 Life Lessons I Learned from Bob Knight
The ProScoutSports LLC blog ^ | April 6, 2015 | Todd Starowitz

Coach Knight didn't hesitate to push young people, or anyone who worked with him to the very edge of their emotional and physical capacity. That was the only way that he thought he could get the very most out of our generally lazy human nature. We were always highly prepared because we didn't want to receive the wrath of Coach if we weren't, or even more so we didn't want to let him down.

For a lot of those kids he coached, Knight was the Father Figure they never had.

1. Demand respect from others but never give respect to anyone

2. Once you’ve achieved the most wins in college history and secured a Div 1 coaching gig for your son, it’s perfectly acceptable to walk out on your team your employer, and the one man in America willing to give you a 2nd chance in the middle of the season

That wasn’t halftime, although it’s presented that way. That was at a practice.

Yes, you can certainly criticize his departure but he did a fantastic job of coaching at Texas Tech. A Sweet 16 appearance, as well as improving from 8 wins the year before he arrived to 23 his first year in Lubbock was remarkable.

I’ve had bosses like Bobby Knight. Then I’ve had kinder gentler bosses.

For me, the kinder gentler ones got more out of me, and motivated me better than the others. I just don’t respond well to people who are pissed off all the time.

Just my view. If Knight’s methods brought out the best in some players I give him credit. Just saying such people didn’t motivate me.

I thought that was one of the more interesting portions of the article as it talked about Knight finding the balance between praise and criticism, although I tend to be a bit more you like you in that regard Dilbert, and today’s younger generation certainly does, although I think we’ve taken it so far that young people can’t be criticized or corrected at all without crumbling.

When asked to comment on the coaching career of Bobby Knight, Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey started to tear up and said “I would have followed that man into war, he practices like he fights and that saves lives.”

Actually he pretty much destroyed Tech basketball, leaving it worse off than when he started. He won early with Dickey’s recruits but his teams got progressively worse because he put no effort into recruiting and ran off the few good players we did get. He had no interest in that program except for what he could get out of it. Good X’s and O’s coach but a despicable human being

So you wouldn’t want to work for Gordon Ramsey?

Bobby Knight coached at West Point. Coach K coached at West Point. They weren’t going to be able to recruit the top-notch high school players. They had to find a way to win. They did.

It is that training/experience that provides them with an edge. They worked with players at West Point who had zero chance of going to the NBA, but they played their guts out. One of those players was Coach K who played his guts out for Coach Knight. They understand the psychology of coaching basketball better than their peers.

I don’t fault a coach for getting excited. I expect the coach to be the team’s #1 fan. The coach invests a lot of his heart with those players. At least coaches like Coach Knight and Coach K do.

They know how to win. Does Obama?

1) Bad behavior will be generally excused, so long as you win.

2) What happens in Puerto Rico does not necessarily stay in Puerto Rico.

3) Chairs do not bounce.

4) Sitting through to the end of all 172 minutes of Patton can pay dividends later on.

5) God himself could not win basketball games at Texas Tech.

Look at those two guys. Hard work, discipline and smarts. I wonder if they ever even dreamed of how things would turn out for them?

I thought I read that Coach Knight had to go through Basic Training in order to coach at West Point back then.
