You are right Jon Snow seems like an idiot. He always has. Guess his red-haired flame was on to something. :)
Currently watching the previous seasons of game of thrones and in my opinion Jon Snow seems alright. I do not think that the previous Lord Commander of the Knights Watch would make him his personal steward and mentor him if he was one.
