hard to believe chicago didn't make the cut. . . .

I'm not surprised by that. Chicago is probably down the list a ways of violent American cities, with many cities being more violent. I grew up in the city of Chicago. No crime at all in my neighborhood. Because of its high population, Chicago has a lot of violence, in terms of absolute numbers, but no so much on a per capita basis.

Also, St. Louis places high on the violent list, because this list is only considering crime within the city limits. I live in south St. Louis County, and it is perfectly safe. The violent crime is concentrated on one side of the city and in some north county communities.

Within cities run by liberals with one-party rule, there is a wide disparity in violent crime rates between whites and non-whites (black & Hispanic). That would tend to rule out liberalism per se as the determining factor in crime.

What I find in common across all these cities is the lack of capitalism and/or rule of law.

I fully expected Chicago to be on the list.

I also grew up in Chicago. Murders are committed by Blacks against Blacks in about 4 Black neighborhoods. Outside of that, Chicago is a safe city.

Precisely. That's why I always say: Ya gotta know your neighborhoods. Even here in St. Louis, the violence is concentrated in certain sections of the city, and as long as you avoid those areas, you'll be OK.
