Journey to the Center of the Common Core, Pt. 2

In Part 1, we took a look at what the Common Core (CC) standards are all about, and their close compliance with the aims and goals of UNESCO and the U.S. Department of Education. We also looked at how there was very little public comment or debate on Common Core prior to its adoption. We also learned Common Core is a “national program, written by a national team,” which contradicts proponents’ claims that CC is a voluntary States’ initiative.

In this article, we will look at the origins of Common Core, and a little more on just what CC is all about. And we will also begin to ask who is behind the push for Common Core; and what are their ultimate goals and aims.

We left off with the “great bait and switch” grant program called Race to the Top (RTTT), created by the federal government to entice States to adopt the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI)—sight unseen—by holding out perks and rewards for States that comply with the CC standards, and withholding Title I grant money for schools in States that do not comply with the Common Core scheme.

The problem isn't Common Core so much as it is federal involvement in schools.

Or state involvement in schools for that matter.

People should be homeschooling their children or paying for private education.

You can't expect others to care as much about your children as you do.

Indoctrination was never so crude and coercive

I agree, the Dept of Education should be abolished.

Thanks for posting - Common Core is pure gobble-de-gook! Reminds of "new" math that I and my generation had to suffer through - I struggled with math later b/c I wasn't taught traditional, easy way to solve math problems.

Looks like the point of CC is to make kids hate math.

This looks like something my dad would have written - he taught math at university level and despised "new" math, said it made it simple mathematics obscure and difficult.

If math were taught like this in the 50s and before, we would have never gone to the moon.

More than 100 Catholic dioceses are using Common Core. This is a startling development: private religious schools inviting the federal government to come in and dictate standards. Nothing good can come of this.

This can be traced back to the idea that schools should prepare children for employment: "school to work." WRONG! Schools should educate citizens, not train workers.

Let the schools teach children how to read, write and cipher, and about the history and culture of their country. Let the employers provide job-specific training.

Thanks for that link. I’ll never understand it - with math, it should be KISS - keep it simple stupid!

Kids already struggle enough with math as it is - CC will make them hate it even more.

I remember reading also there was a program called “Back To Basics” - that sure didn’t last long. It supposedly focused on reading, writing, and arithmetic. Guess those liberal educated teachers couldn’t understand those basic’s ...
