I grew up in east Texas and I'm so old, I remember when I was a young child that was the word commonly used for that race of people. It didn't have a bad connotation to it in east Texas, it was just the name of that group of people.
I also remember when I was a counselor in schools, the name of that group of people was changing so rapidly, I didn't know which name to call these people. I had to write reports after psychological tests with this group of people, and I would question myself which word I should use not to offend this group of people.
