I too find this outrageous but the article leaves a lot to be confused about. While no expert on Canadian Law, I would presume that since jail time is quoted, Mr Elliot has been formally arrested and charged with a crime. Since "
Greg Elliott faces up to six months in prison" is a conditional statement, it appears that the trial has yet to be concluded and thus no sentence YET. Still, it is Canada, a country with much of our same cultural DNA and from the appearance of this story, this individual is beset by his government and is trying to defend himself against imprisonment for mere non-threatening speech.
I once had confidence in being an American with the 1st Amendment privilege that this could not happen down here BUT that feeling is feeling very thin these days. If the religious freedom specified can be interpreted by the Supreme Court to mean freedom to sue by gays for being offended, what certainty remains?
