My best guess right now is that Trump will take the remainder of the GOP vote to a 3rd party and bundle it with a similar portion of the Democrat party, winning at least 40 states.

What makes you think that Trump will get 60% of the GOP vote?

And what makes you think that Trump would get anywhere near that percentage of Democrats to break away?

As a third-party candidate, Trump would not win a single state.

As a third-party candidate, Trump would not be on the ballot in about half of them. The system is rigged against any 3rd party candidate that doesn't already start out as a third party.
