What are your favorite military themed TV series?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 08/21/2015 7:50:23 AM PDT by ken5050

TGIF, so I thought I'd take a little break from ATTAC (all things Trump and Clinton) and turn to a lighter topic. In almost 70 years of network television, the two most popular genres by far have been westerns and police. Doctor/medical dramas have always entertained audiences. But I wanted to see which military themed TV series Freepers like, and/or remember most.

Well, born in the late ‘60s, so when I was growing up, it was Baa Baa Blacksheep, Hogan’s Heroes, and M.A.S.H. (yeah, I know). On occasion, I’d see re-runs of Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C.

Also as Jayne Cobb in firefly. He’s one of the rare conservatives in Hollywood.

As a cadet in the late 1980s, I loved watching the old West Point Story shows - they were on cable access and we watched them in our day room. What was great was the old commercials from the 1950s were still included.

Amazingly, most of the situations Nemoy found himself in were very relatable to us in 1989, 37 years after the series first aired. Even more amazingly, in an episode that featured boxing, Nemoy’s boxing instructor in 1952 was the same guy that taught us boxing.

I never even thought to look for these on Youtube, so thanks for the link.

‘Tour of Duty’ (87-90) was pretty decent. Every time I hear ‘Paint it Black’ I think of the start of that show ..

Great show, short lived.

When I was a kid I built one of those little Radio Shack transmitters.

I used to take it to my friend Steve’s house and we would set it up in his garage (hidden under a roll of carpet, and using a lampstand as an antenna.)

When “Family Affair” came on we would tune it to jam the station.
Then our sisters would let us watch “Rat Patrol” instead.

We didn’t do it all the time, but his mom eventually caught on anyway. They never did find the hidden transmitter though.

LOL! China Beach. Dana Delaney. Good sound tracks. At least it gave some credit for the medical folks who helped keep a lot of our folks alive in perilous conditions. Not so much with mash for me. At the time it was comical but looking back, not so much. So, again, thanks to all the VN vets and to the medical folks who were there too. Yeah, a lot of it was far fetched. So, yeah, Combat was excellent.

How many times did Sgt. Saunders tell Kirby to "check the perimeters"?

My father would laugh to hear us little ones "playing army" and calling out to Chargent Chaunders.

Can’t believe no one has even mentioned this one:

“The Unit”.

Too, “The Last Ship” is not too bad, all things considered.

I would have to rate Victory at Sea number one, because it inspired me to choose Naval Officer Candidate School when my turn came during the Vietnam War. Whenever I took the deck and the conn at sea the theme song was playing in my head.
