The outlook for diesel looks grim after U.S regulators found that the worlds second biggest car manufacturer cheated on its emission tests.
Last Friday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that Volkswagen violated the U.S Clean Air Act. The German auto maker deliberately rigged the so called emission control systems in several models of their cars in order to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions when tested in the lab.
However, when tested on the road, the size of the diesel deception proved to be bigger than many could have imagined. Bloomberg reported on September 22 that on an open road test both the Jetta and Passat models exceeded U.S nitrogen-oxide emissions standards by up to 35 times.

How about the fine for the Animus river spill EPA?
WHY is it bad for diesel ?
This is a hit piece on diesel fuel.
Does that mean I can soon top off my tactical Diesel Reserve with inexpensive Diesel?
No, he is describing the likely outcome of actions the EPA will take in punishing VW and re-writing the emissions standards for diesel cars and SUVs.
EPA did this to recover from the Colorado river/mine disaster. They can now appear as crusaders fighting for clean air and all...
15 months.
EPA is surviving on Fumes
I will bet Diesel lasts a lot longer than the EPA
Bed tanks on yer roll coal ride shouls “always” be full.......:o)
Lefties have always hated diesel
because US industry runs on diesel trucks of all sizes.
Diesel cars are the least of diesel use.
I read that when the emissions controls were enabled, it greatly reduced the giddyup in the car.
Latest:
VW will offer to buy back as many of the cars as they can.
The US has spent millions subsidizing the purchase of diesels (something of which I was unaware).
A bombshell may be waiting, as there are indications that Mercedes and BMW may have used the same ‘trick’ on some of their diesels.
I think the more onerous result of this “deception” is the burden on the owners. I live in Maricopa County, AZ where there is yearly emission test required to register your vehicle. If you do not pass, I think you get one waiver, but are required to go to a mechanic and have your vehicle worked on in order to pass the emissions test.
If I remember correctly, eventually, if your vehicle does not pass, it cannot be registered and subsequently, not allowed on the road.
VW corporation may have 7.3 billion to address the issue. How does the vehicle owner get redress for it? He may be left out in the cold.
Next someone is going to tell me that the Feds passed a law about water used to flush crap down a toilet and it screwed up the performance reality of toilets for 15 years before engineering could straighten it out.
Road to Serfdom tells the story — trying to mandate economies and realities with government planners leads to disaster or totalitarianism.
What brand of Car will Yuppies buy now ?
I thought the Yuppies were already into Prius / Volt / electric. Not that ‘dirty, truck stop diesel’.
VW corporation may have 7.3 billion to address the issue. How does the vehicle owner get redress for it? He may be left out in the cold.
VW has allegedly been doing this since at least 2009. If those vehicles weren't going to pass the AZ emissions tests, they would all have been flunking for years and years.
Since there hasn't been a rash of VW failures in AZ, stands to reason that the "cheat" doesn't make the engines grossly out of spec. State standards for a used vehicle are usually lest stringent than Federal standards for new vehicles.
Natrually. Oil price lets anyone write and epa has always hated diesel
