This is part of my issue with the whole "no child hungry" movement and "25% of our children don't know where their next meal will come from" idea. With all the school breakfast and lunch programs (which continue through the summer months), plus SNAP, WIC, and numerous food charities, the only way kids are going hungry is if their parents are neglecting them or defrauding the system. And you can't fix that problem by throwing more money at it.
No, they’ll fix it (though it isn’t even a real problem) by keeping the children out of the welfare caves for as long as possible. When cities start offering free lunches DURING THE SUMMER, it is obvious.
We are the only country in the world where our underclass has a diabetes/obesity epidemic (including the children).
