I do not know where you live.

Two or three years ago we had a summer Tornado and an early winter ice storm. Both storms left us without power for almost two weeks.

While we were not drinking out of puddles or rummaging through the trash cans for food...we WERE driving forty minutes to get gasoline. And we sat in line for it.

We were cold. We did not have a generator. We were showering at work and at the gym.

THAT is why I prep.

(I learned reloading because when I go to the range I like to shoot a lot.)

The more our side has the better. There is never too much. In every war logistics becomes an issue.

Prepper’s PING!

Average American solider on patrol carries 240rds. I have a reserve (separate from range time ammo which runs any where from equal down to a 1/3 of that amount) of just over 8 times that strictly for my battle rifle during shtf.

IMHO anyone who engages in more than 8 fire fights and/or anyone who believes that they could come threw unscathed 8 fire fights during shtf is mental, doing something wrong or both.

IN addition to typical Honda/ Briggs-Stratton Home Depot generators, add a couple of the inverters that attach to your vehicle BATTERY.

these can push out 2500 - 3500 W continuous when the vehicle is running.

They make a good portable set of alternatives to deliver power on a more mobile and transportable basis than your typical storm generator.

PLUS - your car or truck is virtually inaudible when running compared to a generator. You may find yourself in a situation where you don’t want to advertise your presence.

Also if your outbuilding, or a neighbor’s building or your well head need power, you can drive your car/ truck up next to it without having to lug around a heavy and noisy generator.

Enough so that you don’t have to wonder.

“Enough so that you don’t have to wonder.”

That’s probably the best response to that question I have read. “IF you have to wonder, you don’t have enough.”

Although I do think there's about a 50% chance things will go terribly wrong, I'm not ready to commit to prepping.

Isn't prepping jut a form of insurance?

Like car insurance, home insurance, etc.?

Except that unless you have an auto accident or house fire, after the year is up on those kinds of insurance you have nothing and the insurance company has your money.

With prepping, at the end of the year you still have your preps: food you can eat, water you can drink, stored fuel you can use, guns that work and ammo that shoots.

Your HKTackdriver photobucket album (public) shows a lot more into your preps and kits.

You’re going to die of thirst long before you run out of ammo...

Guns? Ammo? What are those?

Those things you lost when your canoe tipped over several years ago.

IMHO, the primary purpose of having lots of ammunition is to give the would be tyrants nightmares. That is called deterrence, and it far preferable to having to use your prep in actual emergencies.

The secondary purpose is to supply your local militia if things go really bad.

We should not be thinking of individuals or families holding out against rampaging mobs of zombies.

We should be thinking about how we are going to maintain order and restore civilization and the Constitution. Americans spontaneously organize into local militias when needed.

So... the answer is that short of millions of rounds, you cannot have enough. Limit your storage to what you can easily handle in your situation.

Anything less than a couple of hundred rounds per firearm is probably too little.

Another consideration is availability of ammo. That Arisaka or Krag might not be any more useful than a bayonet holder.

In a true SHTF situation, guns and ammo will be lying all over the streets.

Yep. Mostly caused by scoped, suppressed .22 LR rifles ;)
