Racist is one of those terms that gets thrown around for no good reason. Its almost lost its entire meaning and its pretty worthless as a commentary on someones character.
So when I hear that members of a high school marching band in Texas is being accused of racism, I know the reason for it is going to be pretty stupid. And, surprise surprise, I was not disappointed (sadly).
According to this, students from Atascocita High School were suspended or kicked out of marching band because of a gift they gave to students from Summer Creek High School during a football game on Friday. The article says its a tradition for the two schools to exchange gifts during varsity games to show good sportsmanship. The Atascocita students gave the Summer Creek students a Halloween bucket filled with fruit and candy, including a watermelon, coconut, pineapple, and watermelon-flavored gum. Apparently, because the student population of Summer Creek is 40% black, people took that to mean that the Atascocita students were being racist. Because only black people eat watermelon and pineapple and coconut, dont ya know? No white person in the history of the world has EVER enjoyed eating those fruits. Clearly.
The Atascocita students, being kids with common sense and simply thinking they were giving their rivals a gift in keeping with their sportsmanship tradition, didnt think anything of what theyd given the Summer Creek students. Of course, this being 2015 and racial tensions are at an all-time high thanks to the Cult of Social Justice and the Perpetually Offended Brigade, somebody complained about the inherent microaggressions and acted like the Atascocita kids tried to lynch the Summer Creek kids and barely missed (I dont think a Halloween bucket of candy and fruit would constitute the same level of outrage). So, the Atascocita marching band is out a handful of members for someone taking offense to something that any sane, rational human being that doesnt have a social justice grievance chip on their shoulder wouldnt have ever thought of.
Heres what some of the Atascocita kids said about the controversy
Carolina Andaverde, who plays the flute at Atascocita, said she and her classmates didnt mean anything by it.
We werent being racist towards them. If they took it that way, were sorry. We didnt mean any harm, Andaverde said. Our parents raised us better.
Another Atascocita student, Alyssa Taylor, said that as someone who is mixed race, she didnt see what was wrong with the gift.
I dont take offense to that. How can someone else take offense? Taylor said.
No kidding, Alyssa. How can someone else take offense?
I’ve heard the watermelon thing. But I’ve never heard anything about pineapple or coconut. Aren’t those Pacific islander things?
Parents should sue until it hurts. Then go to private school.

Coconut is a slur like is like Oreo. Dark on the outside, white on the inside. It’s usually a Black on Black slur against Negros that have assimilated into society.
The war on whites continues.
Obama has made me realize that they will use that accusation to justify any abuse of our rights.
Actually I think this is a good thing in a way... the kids are getting firsthand experience of runaway political correctness at a young age and can see how utterly ridiculous it is.
The MAJORITY that look at this with a crooked eye will keep this memory with them.
Of course, I was raised in the South, and "Soul Food" is just "food" to me, so maybe I'll just never understand.

I’ve heard that all people of color enjoy watermelon, pineapple and coconut. Even the word “coconut” is racist. Good thing they didn’t include bananas, because we know that the fact that monkeys like them is very racists.
I haven’t cared for years if someone called me “racist, bigot, (insert latest victim)-phobe.
They say it like its the ultimate insult, the ultimate argument winner, the most horrible thing in the world and I must run and hide in a corner and apologize profusely. Give all my possessions to them and commit suicide.
If someone says ‘you’re a whateverphobe’, I say ‘yeah, so? What are you going to do about it?’
Someone once served me a whitebread sandwich and I’ve had PTSD ever since.
The proper response is:
I am offended that you are offended.
That has become the most reasonable response to such accusations. Ignore the perceived stigma and just say what you think.
I love watermelon. I am a bit of a watermelon nut. It is one of my favorite things ever. I also love fried chicken.
I've never actually comprehended how enjoying these things is regarded as a stereotype.
Please, dfwgator, not at lunchtime!
What Norwegian wouldn't love a gift like that?...uff da!
