I read Mein Kampf in college. Doesn’t make me a nazi.

I read the Karma Sutra when I was a young man. It did not make me a great lover. (lots of practice did.)

Reading competing ideas does not subject you to following them. In fact, most of the time it reinforces your own beliefs.

Sometimes, some of the holier than thou Christians on FR sound more like sharia follow muzzles. Or at the best, Puritans.

Really?

It’s called “tradition.”

Holidays generally fall on “traditional” date, not necessarily an actual anniversary.

Jeez. Who gives you the authority to question my authoritah.

“For 11 years in a row, dressing up as a witch has been the number one costume choice for adults in the United States.”

I don’t get it. Why would so many women want to look like Hillary Clinton?

I see that Puritanism lives on. They used to ban Christmas too and if they could have their way, they probably would do so again.

This guy sounds like an insufferable old scold who probably spends his time playing Taylor Swift songs backwards to try and find satanic messages in them. In fact, that's probably what he used the $74.34 he saved by not celebrating Halloween on.

I do find the trick-or-treating a bit tiresome however after all these years, especially now that the children are grown up and moved out of the house. Last night, my wife and I turned the outside lights off on the house and we went to a German restaurant in which we had potato pancakes, apple sauce, schnitzel, strudel and a small barrel of beer. On the way there and back, we listened to the Spook station on Sirius radio and took the long way home through some dark woods. That was how I celebrated Halloween and I liked it.

You can’t tell the size from the photo. It would have to be either 1.5 times larger or .75 times smaller. Here the kicker: it cannot be used to convey the idea that it is real, for example, by leaving it as a tip.

Small town America. Evil can spring up anywhere.

I've had frustrated waitresses show them to me.

Typically, a well dressed group apparently just from church would eat and pay for just the meal and leave it folded on the table.

I've seen both $10's and $20's.

It happened often enough that they weren't fooled and were just annoyed.

There were bible stores in the area that sold tablets full of them that you tore off.

[It was all made up.]

How much different is baby sacrifice than the atrocities being done by ISIS and inner city gangs? Open your eyes.

Huh? How does Halloween have anything to do with ISIS...except for some trick or treaters dressed like terrorists?

That 80's Day Care Centers/Satanists scam was worse than Nifong and the Duke Lacrosse case.

At least Nifong lost his law license and went to jail, the cops and prosecutors that persecuted people back in the 80's kept their jobs.

Don't make me use caps lock, those supposed satanic baby sacrifices never happened.

It. happened. It was kept hush-hush.

Be careful how you make uninformed statements about pastors.

I think this article gets published every year.

Yes it does, at least once, if not more, or ones very similar to it. Yawn!

That's OK.

Soon we will be tricked and treated by those not posting this sort of posts to the Religion Forum where it belongs into to reading posts on how Thanksgiving was a holiday created by Abraham Lincoln to perpetuate The War Of Northern Aggression, or not to mention that those nasty pre-Christian Europeans were pagans, most of them being our ancestors, also celebrated "harvest festivals" and how Thanksgiving is also "pagan" in origin, and that the only holidays that we should recognize are those recognized in the OT by semi-nomadic Jewish sheep herders living in Israel well over 2,000 years ago because, well culturally we have so much in common with them.

And of course as to #8 - the author surely chooses to ignore all the OT - in Deuteronomy and Leviticus in particular, the many and very detailed descriptions of the correct ways to perform animal sacrifices and burnt offerings to The Lord...but then as Emily Litella often said - "never mind".

And after Thanksgiving, with all its gluttony doncha know now, and then all those "Black Friday" sales the next day, with of course being "black", must have its roots in Satanism and Witchcraft, and BTW - of that pumpkin pie and oyster dressing or stuffing made with Jimmy Dean pork sausage or the Smithfield Ham if you're Southern, not being exactly Kosher or very "Biblical" = well enough said - we just can't have any of that!

And then on Thanksgiving there is the watching of the modern Gladiator Games - i.e. Football - oh the horrors !!!

After all the ancient Jews of Moses' time and even Jesus never played or enjoyed Football so then after all, neither should we - but like clockwork around here, after Thanksgiving and all its many "evils" lectured to and enumerated for us, next we will be "tricked and treated" by not posting this sort of post to the Religion Forum where it belongs and often to News/Activism forum, many posts that says Christmas is actually a pagan holiday or celebrated at the wrong time of year if it should be even celebrated at all, and such if you put up a Christmas Tree or Wreath on your door or bake a Yule Log, you are actually inviting the Devil into your home and that Santa is actually an anagram for Satan and that Frosty The Snowman is actually a Zombie of African Voodu and origins! Brawwhahhhahhhahhha!

FWIW I personally love going to my local mall and telling all the children waiting on line to see Santa, that not only will they "shoot their eye out" if they ask for a Red Rider BB Gun, but that they are also going straight to Hell even if they ask for a only football! And forget about his dad's Leg Lamp - pure evil I tell ya! /S

"and it is deeply rooted in ancient pagan traditions that would get people thrown in prison if they attempted to duplicate them today".

With all the serious crimes going on today, along with the recent erosion of our Constitutionally enumerated Rights and the government - on both the Federal and local level all too often overstepping their legal bounds, and with all the PC BS today that says that anything and everything is offensive to someone and can't therefore be "tolerated" and must be suppressed - no one allowed to have any "fun" - it would surely do my heart very good to see the local police "seek and find" and then jail or even torcher my little nieces and their parent's for going out trick or treating last night; one of them dressed as a ballerina, one dressed as a pirate, one dressed as a lion and two dressed as princesses, and also for jailing their neighbors, who willingly gave out candy and had those "evil" Jack-O-Lanterns on their porches, under your idea of a Christian Police State version of the Taliban because, well just because you don't like it.

Seek and Find - I think you might be hungry and since you didn't buy any candy for the trick or treaters' or probably for yourself and "you are not "you" when you're hungry" - lighten up "Betty" and have a Snickers Bar - it will make you feel better. : )

Great. You believe there is a huge conspiracy keeping all these satanic baby sacrifices from being known.

This was some of the worst prosecutorial misconduct in the last 50 years.

They hypnotized toddlers to make them tell whoppers about what was going on and taped it. There was no cross examination allowed of the accusers because they’re too delicate.

It’s similar to today where girls on campus can accuse a guy of rape or sexual harassment and not have to undergo questioning by the accused except the worst that can happen here is that the guy is tossed out of college instead of getting prison time.

It never happened, your pastor and sheriff is either a liar or a moron. Look for another church.

Your hush-hush is bullshit. People’s lives were ruined by police and prosecutors who had no interest in anything other than satisfying their own fantasies.

“It. happened. It was kept hush-hush.”

I assume you are talking about the McMartin Preschool. I had friends who worked for a well known Christian research group at the time and McMartin is something they followed closely. Among their sources were detectives on the case.

The McMartin case was a hysteria ginned up by the Childrens’ Institute International and their technique of suggestive questioning that produced bizarre stories from the kids including a horse being killed and buried, kids being flushed down toilets and witches flying. There was no evidence of any of the charges against the McMartins but they were ruined by what amounted to a Salem witch trial mentality.

That was a horrible time. There was a similar case out my way (Fells Acres) in which a mother and her two children were wrongfully convicted of child abuse based on the same bogus allegations as with the McMartin case. They spent years in jail and had their lives ruined as a result. If not for the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, they might still be rotting in jail today.

As an aside, Martha Coakley was the prosecutor in that case and she fought like hell to keep them in prison even though she came to realize they were innocent as she did not want to jeopardize her political career. That's why it was so satisfying to me that she got beat like a rented mule in that special senate election that Scott Brown won back in 2010. Seems so long ago now.

It was because of cases like that that I refused to have anything to do with children other than my own. I never coached Little League, was never a Scout Leader or any of that. I don't even like having other people's children over my house. I think a lot of other men feel the same way.

It’s our most ancient holiday. Sure, some could take it awry, but it’s easy not to do that too.

We went trick or treating yesterday, lots of kids, all cute. And even in the gang of teens that came to my door, none of the girls were dressed slutty. And this is in NJ.

It was a lovely fall day, really a perfect Halloween.

As I said on another thread, there is a Biblical holiday celebrated with costumes and jokes. It's called Purim.

How many of these so called "druidic" sects celebrate 4/30? That's supposed to be even bigger than 10/31.

Halloween actually has its beginnings in the Catholic faith. To remember the lives of their departed saints, people were encouraged to dress up like them on religious holidays. Thus, costuming was born.

That's not the beginning. It was an ancient Celtic festival adopted by the western church as an act of "inculturation."
