Are you asking where the “war is real” stories; the non-political “war is horrible” type of stories?
I think I did misunderstand you point.
If you are looking for THAT, at least in a non-fiction way, “War” by Sebastian Younger comes close. It reads like a novel.

I think it's more of a subtle undermining of the warrior mentality. I don't know if this is true or not, maybe just an urban legend, about French male students being taught to negotiate and German students, male and female, to kick ass and take names.
