Why do we have nuclear weapons? Under what circumstances are they to be used, if ever?

My dad also was gearing up for the mainland invasion of Japan. A “90 day wonder” ensign to be in the first waves in charge of four LCVPs full of marines, he was told they were expecting 80 percent casualties totaling over a million U.S. dead, along with another 2 million Japanese military and civilian.

When the bombs dropped and the war ended they cried knowing they would live and have a life. We just have no clue what the “greatest generation” endured, and what nuclear weapons in fact prevented.

Why does FR still allow inane postings such as this one to stay up?

You and Bernie Ward should do lunch sometime. He is of the firm belief that if we (the USA) simply disarmed ourselves then there would be no more problems with us from any other nation since we would no longer be a threat.

You might want to look up Michael Moore while you are about it, as I believe you two would get along famously.

Oh, and step off the Medical Marijuana, while you still can.

You missed the point, Utilizer - completely. I am for using nukes. Some people are hard to get through to. Not sure what Michael Moore has to do with anything but I am not a fan so it really doesn’t matter.

Hmm. Apparently, I missed the “/sarc” tag. We need a strong military with the strongest and most effective weapons we can produce and deploy as needed. That includes nukes, so we are in agreement on that at least.

Cheers.

If you can find a copy of my 1988 book A Fighting Chance, it will answer a lot of these questions. In it I apply Just War Doctrine to the use of nuclear weapons. Deterrence, legitimate and illegitimate targets, civil defense, etc.

It's out of print, although Amazon still has it. It's also out of date with the demise of the Soviet Union. However, the logic still applies. Given that Iran will have nukes in the near future. maybe I need to update it.

If we can have nuclear weapons, why can’t Iran?

For the same reason we try to keep weapons away from homicidal lunatics. The EXACT same reason.

Next stupid question?

At what point does America decide we need to use them?

When the price of using them is not as high as the cost of not using them.

What would have to happen?

The last time someone took a look at what happened on Okinawa and decided that that times 10 would not be a smart thing to do.

Perhaps the fact that homicidal lunatics obtain weapons all the time escaped you.

Next stupid answer?

Your phrasing and bit-by-bit posts makes it look troll-like. But I see where you are heading (mainly by your post to the CCW poster where you said “would you use it to protect your family”).

So - the actual question might be “Why do we have nukes if we aren’t willing to use them in our fight(s) against terrorists, Saddam, ISIS, etc.”

I think that at the moment it would be considered “premature” by the rest of the world, and make us look like the bad guys. Heck, we are looked at as the bad guys for using them to end WWII against people that really do make ISIS look like the JV team.

Under Obama, he had really limited our rules of engagement. If we have to continue the fight against terrorism, and remove them from their havens where they can plan their attacks, I think there are lots of other standard options available.

I suppose once the terrorists use chemical or dirty nuke bombs, then the gloves might come off and the world would understand the scope of things. But still, there needs to be a leader that can communicate that in war, even with today’s more accurate and better weapons, civilians near our enemy will be killed. But, the sooner we can end, and win, the war - the fewer civilians on both sides will be hurt or die.

They have already beheaded people, drowned people, raped and stoned women, killed children, crucified people. You cannot deal with them like a “normal” enemy. Either we fight to win at all costs or we lose.

Well - so far that is “their people”. Just like the world turned its head in Cambodia, the Congo, and all the other hell-holes with civil war, etc. (I have mentioned this to my kids when they study the Holocaust “so it can never happen again”. It KEEPS happening kids! It is happening NOW!)

You make a good point though. But the goal needs to be to exterminate them as the nukes probably won’t deter them. And I think it would be a hard sell to nuke some/all of their command centers. And I’m not so sure how effective that would be either.

The fact that preventatives are not perfect is no reason not to try.

You demonstrate that the saying about there being no stupid question is wrong.

You have done nothing but ask stupid illogical questions this entire thread.
