I’d opt for the 1911 given the choice. Maybe a model 36 for CVS if someone else is buying...
S&W M&P. Mine is a CORE in .40. Better ergonomics than the glock and the trigger is almost as good as my Kimber. Best of both worlds.

People that don’t like the “feel” of a Glock should try one with a beavertail blackstrap.
I spent a lot of time and money getting my glock working for IDPA and steel challenge. New barrel, new sights, new trigger, new sear, new springs, another set of sights. The “blackstrap” is just the type of geegaw I would have thrown on there. After all that I did well with the glock, that is once I did the work and put in the time to get used to the platform. That being said, the S&W M&P line is all the glock is in term of reliability (excluding all of the problems Glock had with their Gen4 rollout) and has it beat in ergonomics. Both have crappy triggers out of the box, but the M&P has more potential to have a good trigger. The M&P will be my go to pistol until I have enough disposable income to have a custom 2011 built.
I lot of the responses have overlooked that basic premise of the discussion. Most true 1911's have a 4" to 5" barrel and weight in at 34 oz to 45 oz. Although there are exceptions to every rule, that's a lot of gun for concealed carry, particularly in the warmer months. Also, the overwhelming vast majority of us will never have to draw our weapon in a defensive situation, but if we do, the the encounter is most likely to occur within seven yards -- which is point and shoot range, as opposed to a careful aim. Given these parameters of the discussion, I would rather have a Glock 26, 27, or 43, than a 1911, for every day concealed carry. My preference, however, is not a Glock at all, but rather, a Springfield XD compact or XDS.
The 1911 was designed by a man who devoted himself to innovative weapon design and it was built for an army that won its wars. The Glock is the brain child of a curtain rod manufacturer, made for a summer conscript army that hasn’t fought anyone for keeps since they were the Nazi’s JV squad.
