Ted Cruz displays his "heartland values" by playing dress-up. He puts on hunting clothes and face paint for a photo op to make people think he's a hunter. He puts on a shiny new flannel shirt to make people think he's a regular Joe. I almost expect him to start showing up in Iowa in farm country wearing striped bib overalls to show how much he understands the farmers.
When Trump campaigns wearing a finely tailored suit, people expect that he'll also be wearing a suit in the oval office. It kind of reminds a lot of them of how Reagan used to treat the honor of the position.
