Is Titanium Bulletproof?
A Shooting Journal ^ | 1/31/2016 | J Hines

Titanium is strong and light, but is it bulletproof?

That's exactly what the folks at Demolition Ranch decided to find out when they received a 1 1/4 inch chunk of this lightweight, high-strength metal.

They put it through some serious paces starting with a .22 long rifle and ending with a .50 BMG. Watch the video to see if this super metal is was able to take the punishment.

So in review, titanium is light, but it will not float on water. It will withstand nearly any hunting or self-defense type round indefinitely, but given enough rounds with a super high-power weapon loaded with armor piercing ammunition, it can be penetrated. See the action here.

Fun fact: titanium burns in pure nitrogen. Almost nothing else does. You’re welcome.

We say something similar in machine design:
You can’t make it idiot proof, only idiot resistant.

Heh.

Cotton’s “bullet proof” if you pile it thick enough.

Well yeah. You can always wear an A-10 bomber’s titanium bathtub that can withstand 23mm cannon fire from a Russian quad ZSU Shilka. Now that would be some feat. ;^)

My boss used to have a sign that read “The item was idiot proof, Then they built a better idiot.”

The only thing that is truly bullet proof is Chuck Norris.

Man that's so yesterday, as anyone here on FR can clearly see the only thing that is bulletproof is.................Donald Trump, and if you disagree you are clearly deranged or an imbecile.................or a deranged imbecile, and that's what you'll hear from his polite supporters.

Why not go whole hog? :)

It's easy if you have that magical energy source to power the suit! :)

Armor always has to be balanced against offensive payload, range, and available power. When the power source is the human metabolism, the "useful load" is very limited.

Kevlar and titanium are lighter/better than just solid steel plates, but even then there's a limit.

...and yes, I think that thing on top is the mortar baseplate.

Iron has a different strength than steel.

Likewise, Titanium alone has different characteristics than when it is combined with other stuff. Imagine titanium-kevlar.

Pure titanium also gets very brittle if scratched, that’s why it is usually alloyed with another metal.

You’d think, huh? Watched an episode of “Wonder Woman” last night. The Nazis had developed a chain so strong an elephant couldn’t break it. Wow...some chain.

I don’t know about the gender, but it looks pretty heavy to me; I wouldn’t want to have to schlepp that much weight very far.
