The polls show that Trump does not draw enough from the other side to even beat Cruz, let alone one of the D’s. Trump is drawing some support from Dems who are just looking at the universe of Republican candidates. Once the contest becomes Trump vs Sanders or Clinton, that crossover support evaporates.
A good example is the comments made by Jimmy Carter. He obviously did not endorse Trump, but he did say that he preferred Trump over Cruz. That would not carry over to the general.
The conflict is in your reasoning. Cruz dinged Trump for getting involved in a state issue, and choosing sides. There is no way to stretch that to mean Cruz supported keeping the flag, it’s just another cheap shot at Cruz based on nothing logical.

I'm not buying your reason why the ad was made. The obvious purpose of the ad was to portray Trump as anti-flag and appeal to the confederate flag supporters that Ted stands with them. If Cruz supported the removal of the flag, why make the ad? Unless he is using the issue as a way to garner votes (pandering). And if he is upset that Trump "got involved" in a state issue by expressing his opinion as a private citizen, he is not that good of a constitutionalist.
And yet Cruz can't come close to beating him. Near Rubio in SC and barely beat Jeb in NH.
Trump is the ultimate cry-bully.

Since the flag came down, I have not heard many complaints from the people in South Carolina. No articles, no protests, nothing. Not sure why, but that is also a truth.
Do you honestly trust PACS? I don’t. I don’t need to proof to prove suspicion. Yes, I’m suspicious of PACs as you should be as well. Are you not?

First thing, Cruz didn’t make the ad.
But, yes, a private citizen has the right to express an opinion on a given subject. That does NOT insulate said private citizen for negative response to his opinion. This freedom to speak one’s mind goes both ways. So whoever made the ad is well within their rights to criticize Trump for his position, don’t you think?
But how many southerners are seething inside?
They know that any one who would dare join an organized protest would be labeled a KKKlanner and would be tarred and feathered and “lynched” by the propaganda organs.

I used to be a Trump supporter for the same reason you state. He was extremely effective at making himself heard, and taking a wrecking ball to the liberal propaganda organs (the media) and political correctness and anyone who gets in his way - he’s a great salesman - you want to believe what he says, you want to believe he will make America great again.
I liked Cruz a lot also because he’s truly grounded in conservatism - it’s part of his being. I trust him more. But he didn’t quite have the same ability to steamroll our adversaries the way Trump does.
The thing that started make me rethink Trump was his inconsistencies and the way he could turn on people that he just said he liked. One day the establishment is the enemy, the next day he’s in love with Pelosi, Reid, Schumer and McConnell. And the thing that truly turned me off is his use of the same demagogue language that the left uses and even worse. Stuff about leaving people dying in the streets, Bush lied, Bush knew about 9/11, defunding parenthood one day and then saying that they do wonderful things. And on and on.
Bottom line I have no clue of what he’s going to do, because what he says today, he could easily change tomorrow. And us conservatives could easily become his enemies and then he can just as effectively use his wrecking ball against us. So one of his strength could become a weapon he uses against us.
So I’m back with Cruz. I’m much more confident that he will do what he says - he has proven that against some very stiff opposition. Also he’s getting better at dishing it out, as he has proven with his recent tiffs against Trump. So he will also fare well against whoever the democrats select.
The ideal would be a Cruz with a Trump personality.
