People bear some of the responsibility for the consequences of what they say (see post #45). They most certainly have the right to say it but that does not change that fact.

Yep. One thing this election has shown me is that my liberal friends who whine about there being a core of racist, misogynist, and antisemite conservatives were a lot more accurate than I had imagined. I believe the majority of the prejudiced are more fringe than core -- following charismatic individuals rather than policy -- but there's a boatload of them surfacing on conservative websites this go round.
IMHO Trump is not nearly so racist (or probably as misogynist or antisemite) as some of his followers, but I do think he's often playing to that audience. Which will likely hurt him if he runs in the general election.

Yes, you are right. people read and hear what they want. I was listening to yesterday’s Gun Talk Podcast this afternoon and even the Cruz supporter that does that show heard it the way I read it. He said that disappointingly, even Cruz blamed the victim. The host of that show is onboard with all the gun rights groups that back Cruz. The reason he took it that way and I did also is because that is what Cruz did all weekend long.

But any campaign responsibility responsibility starts at the top. Any candidate is responsible for the culture of the campaign. And when you have a campaign that disrespects the voters, when you have a campaign that affirmatively encourages violence, when you have a campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press, you create an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discourse.
