If they don’t have the chip reader, you just swipe the card like previously.

I’ve probably done that in a dozen places, I haven’t seen a gas station yet that has the chip reader installed. WalMart and Meijer have the chip reader on their check lines.

Seriously? The old strip readers can process the chip card?

Yeah, the only drawback I have found is ATM machines. Almost all of them were set up so you just inserted the card and pulled it out, so I never forgot my card in the machine anymore.

Now, if you have the chip you have to insert the card and leave it there while you do the transaction, so I run the risk of forgetting my card again... ah, progress.
