I had to work with a woman last year who at 28 years old and holding an MBA could not fill out a check properly. I’ve never seen someone screw up a single check in four different ways but she managed it - signature on the memo line, amount written in the payable to line, different amount written in the numerical amount box, and payee’s name not on the check at all.

Yes, this was an MBA holder and a check was too complicated for her to figure out.

I think I’ve written 1 check in the 21st century. They’re a post dated idea, the only people still using them are deliberately not joining the modern world.

Back when, we learned how to write a check and balance our accounts in 4th grade. We’d bring our pennies to school one day a week and the teacher would stamp our bank passbooks. The bank was Ben Franklin Savings and Loan and gave us heavy metal Ben Franklin piggy banks. I had one for years and may still have it somewhere.

But kids today think they’re so smart.
