Turning your cottage into the ultimate weekend getaway has never been more simple thanks to Adam Holman, as he drums up some easy, quirky and fun DIY projects that you can do next time youre at the cottage.
Or you just want to taste something grilled for a change. :)
Enjoy.
I’ve seen this DIY “Big Green Egg” idea on Alton Brown’s website, too. Clever.
I remember Alton doing this on one of his shows, the best show on the Food Network, although there are better recipes for a lot of what he made.
Alton Brown did one of these on Good Eats
I’ve been using my flower pot smoker for 6 or 7 years. Burned up/rusted out a couple of hotplate burners @$10. NOTHING beats smoked ribs.
Ping
To be entirely truthful, I never even considered using a flowerpot like this, but after watching the vid, I can see doing something quite similar, as I have quite a few old flowerpots that I have access to that might be fun to try with instead of fussing with a huge charcoal grill.
Simplicity is always beneficial in its own right, and I can’t wait to try this soon and see how some BBQ pork ribs turn out when I try this method of grilling them! :)
I think the Rocket Stove designs are the most fascinating, but I worry about creating a grill so hot that it winds up charring the meal while the centre portions remain relatively uncooked.
This design looks as if it might not have that problem.
You don’t need to ping Me, mate. I started the thread.

And cheaper than 1200 bucks for the “egg” cookers.
Can anybody say with a certainty...? I am wondering...
He talks about drilling into the flowerpot for convenience. That aside, does anyone know if one must use a “masonry” bit to drill, or does a standard run-of-the-mill drill bit like you find included with most powered drills work just as well as long as you take the simple precautions he outlines in this vid?
Anyone have any experience with ceramics that can tell what happens if you do use a normal drill bit that might be related to this?
bttt
regular carbide bits will go thru clay pots, just follow the direction of gradually drilling out the holes with larger bits. drill the pilot hole and don’t jump to a huge bit
And will it then dull the drill bits if I use them in this manner? Granted, steel is supposed to be harder than the clay that normal flowerpots are made from, but I have had the unpleasant experience of drilling into some repurposed wood contributions and hitting an old broken-off bit of drywall screw that mangled part of the drill bit and made it unusable as a result.
The drill bit was SUPPOSED to be hardened and quite tough, but a simple little drywall screw fraction ruined it. So, how much of a chance would I be taking if I did indeed use a normal bit on a ceramic flowerpot, do you know then?

I have always done that when I want the article to save to my pings for future reference. Maybe I have been doing it incorrectly. It wouldn’t be the first time ; )
Hit reply on anyone’s post, delete their name, and type in your name, leaning conservative as the person being replied to..then type in bookmark, ping, whatever, and hit post.
No worries. In that case, the accepted protocol is to ping yourself to the thread. Just click on any of the “reply” buttons (preferably the one that originated the thread, of course) and change the name on the “To” field to your username.
You will then have pinged yourself to the thread for future reference.

Like this, see?
Cheers!
