Picking a conservative like Newt would be an awesome choice. The main reason I think he won’t pick Newt is that Trump seems to prefer an element of unpredictability

Newt can out think and out argue anyone in DC. If I were Trump, I’d tell him he’s my Chief of Staff and that I wanted him campaigning for me non-stop. Newt would rip any lib to shreds in any forum.
