That happened to me, too! Well not a sinkhole but my boyfriend and I are picnicking in the Smokey Mountains, at the top of a steep hill that led to a cliff.

I lost my footing and fell down the hill... fortunately I was able to grab a tree before the cliff began, and climbed back up.

So glad you made it, FRiend.

May this lady rest in peace. Very sad accident.

She fell while wading in the river above the falls and the current swept her over.

If you must play in a river—don’t do it near a waterfall.

In general, I stay out of the water. It has too many germs in it that can make you very sick, even fatally ill.

City folk are often surprised how slippery wet moss is and how strong the force of water can be.

Yep, these are the same folks that moved to Florida and began lecturing us dumb crackers on how harmless the docile alligators were.

Water coursing over the rock for hundreds, thousands, perhaps millions of years, has polished those rocks to a very smooth surface. Couple that with the speed of the water, zip ! She was a goner before she knew what hit her.

The government should do something. Why don’t they put a guardrail across the top edge of the waterfall so people won’t go over? /sarcasm ;-)

There have been deaths over the years at Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills as well.

http://northeastexplorer.com/wordpress/?p=2573

There seems to be an increasing trend that people are being reported to have fallen to their deaths from losing their footing taking selfies in high places to impress their instagrams. Not saying this is what happened to the reporter (very sad) but people do need to be aware when taking selfies. (I don’t personally do instagram.)

The person standing at the top of the second falls in the picture gives perspective of how high the Kaaterskill falls actually are - not very safe looking!

Looks like she never went river swimming or waded in a swift running river. The experience is totally different than lake or pool swimming. It takes very little moving water to knock a wander off her feet and take her where the river wants to take her. I know; I’ve done river swimming and have experienced kayak wipeouts in fast moving water.
