His wife said that she couldn’t speak because of her grief.

After 12 years? Possible, but that has not been my experience. In the years following my son's death, I chatted with and came to know about 100 or so fellow "Gold Star" parents. Consensus seemed to be that it takes maybe 2-4 years to wrap one's head around the loss. My wife has been praying for our son every single day for the last 11 1/2 years, but I wouldn't exactly call her "grief stricken". But Buddhists do have a different mindset than Muslims.
