I too adore Windows 7 and recently spent not a small amount of money (thousands) on a number of top of the line Apple machines... All of them, to me, useless and irritating. My Acer laptop now owns its own Pelican case and I suppose I too should go Linux. I knew a little BASIC back in grade school, could it be that hard to exit Jobs & Gates' Cave?

Actually eager to jump on any Linux thread here. If YOU right wing rednecks with your guns and your bibles can do it I can too, right?

Ahem.

...Right?

Buy a new HD for your computer to give Linux a good test drive.

Linux rocks. One tip that I have learned over the years is to put the OS (whichever flavor you brew) on three partitions: /boot, /, and /data (setup some folders and soft-links to those folders to use for most of your home data). I do this during installation (select the custom disk config option) Then, when it comes time to upgrade, you can mash and slash /boot and / (which is the main OS partition), and preserve /data. Then, go play whackamole with the different distros until one you like materializes from the smoke and fog.

My flavor now is Fedora 24 with Mate (pronounced 'mah-tay') with the Compiz whirly/wobbly windows and desktop cube. With LibreOffice, Python3.5, Geany, Glade, Gtk+3, Postgresql 9.5.3, Evolution (email), PaleMoon (browser), Lynx (text-based browser) - altogether a usable system.

You just have to accept that you will be doing the work yourself; the kids at Microsoft and Apple won't be sending you wizards to complicate your life. Spend some time, learn the basics, and have a blast!
