Germany were made to work for their gold medal as they recorded a narrow 2-1 win over Sweden in the Olympic Women's final.
Dzsenifer Marozsan netted a beauty for the Germans just after the break and Linda Sembrant scored in the wrong net to double the opposition's lead before Stina Blackstenius pulled one back for Sweden.
The Swedes had booked their place in the final with a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Brazil in the semi-finals to come up against a German outfit that had cruised past Canada in their previous fixture.
With 12 goals en route to the final Germany were the favourites to take the gold and certainly had the better opportunities in the first half.
Anja Mittag almost opened the scoring in the 25th minute but inexplicably turned the ball wide after pouncing on a rebounded shot.
Coming out of the break Germany were once again on the offensive and it yielded a goal as Marozsan produced a blinder that flew into the top corner.
Marozsan was then instrumental in the second goal which cames just past the hour mark as her freekick flew off the upright and Sembrant's errand clearance resulted in an own goal.
Sweden replied not long afterwards as Blackstenius reduced the defecit in the 66th minute as she converted Kosovare Asslani's cross.
With time running out Marozsan almost put the result beyond doubt with a terrific freekick that was saved before giving the ball away in the midfield and affording Sweden the chance to launch a dangerous counter that nearly resulted in an equaliser.
Sweden then launched wave after wave of attack but Germany held out to grab the win and the Olympic gold.
I hope for the best. Winning both golds for Germany is probably too good to be true.
Go Germany!
