You are correct. They released this to snuff out the Wikileaks dump. It worked.
Well it kept the dump from being a headline story and getting in the public discussion.
I am not sure if it will keep revelations from the dump becoming a story...but that depends on what is in there and whether it can be confirmed to be authentic.
