The term Red Neck originally meant you were a Presbyterian. The wealthy Easterners were all Episcopalians but the Western backwoods types were Presbyterians and Presbyterian clergy wore red collars around their necks
I thought it just came from sunburn on the back of the neck from working outdoors.
