That is the problem, it is an outdated design. Many of the more modern firearms are much more reliable.

That is the problem, it is an outdated design. Many of the more modern firearms are much more reliable. The 1911 design is certainly not outdated and has been copied and extrapolated into many variants.
The design is also reliable - the reason that it is not a contender here is cost. It takes a heck of a lot of machining to make a 1911
