Trump's Opening Act Is More Conservative Than Reagan

Politics: During the primaries and the presidential campaign, Donald Trump rarely described himself as a conservative. But his appointments and his initial actions as president have turned out to be as about as right wing as it gets.

Trump over the years has earned a healthy amount of skepticism from conservatives, including from this page.

National Review, in its editorial denouncing Trump early in the primary season, called him "a menace to American conservatism who would take the work of generations and trample it underfoot in behalf of a populism as heedless and crude as the Donald himself."

We asked at one point whether Trump was a "common-sense conservative" — as he described himself — or "just mostly liberal." When Trump secured the nomination, we argued that "Republicans have managed to pick the least reliably conservative candidate out of a field that started with some of the most experienced, dedicated and successful conservatives ever to have thrown their hats into the ring."

But since winning the election, Trump has acted more conservative than Ronald Reagan.

He’s a workaholic version of Reagan. What he accomplishes in a few months is going to blow minds.

Donald Trump is not a Conservative!! Bill Krystal, George Will, John McCain, and Lindsey Graham are Conservatives.

he has the potential to blow Reagan out of the water. Reagan made an amnesty and Trump is building a wall, but these are different times. Trump is doing better than expected.

No one is going to BLOW REAGAN OUT OF THE WATER.

It’s a dumb ####ing thing to say. Different times and different needs to be accomplished.

Freeing Eastern Europe is an INCREDIBLE feat.

Again, BRINGING DOWN COMMUNISM AND FREEING EASTERN EUROPE IS AN INCREDIBLE FEAT.

So let’s not start saying stupid things about the Great One.

Donald will be great in his own right.

Reagan saved America so this day could come. Reagan set things up so Russia could be, if not a friend, an ally against a common foe.

Those too young to remember the late 1970s would do well to revisit it.

If I start seeing regular posts about Reagan not being as good at this or that I’m gonna go through the ####ing roof.

He was/is a GREAT man.

No more comparisons.

God bless Trump and God BLESSED US with the GREAT ONE.

“Mr. Gorbachev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!!!”

Before being elected, Trump never gave me any good reason to think he was especially conservative. I voted for him because the alternative was not only unthinkable, but would have constituted an immoral action on my part. My thought was, “don’t tell us, show us.” In these opening days, he’s shown me a thing or two, and I’m pleasantly surprised. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope he keeps it up.

Reagan didn’t have the House, and plenty of lefties in the Senate who make McCain and Graham look like Spiro Agnew. (Weicker, Packwood, Bayh). Trump took the hiring freeze from Reagan’s playbook, and Reagan formed he Grace Commission, using private business experts to make government more efficient. That’s fine, borrow from the best! Trump is doing great!

Yes, you are right.

Somehow I don’t even care to hear about the Never Trumpers’ ideas right now.

This is such a grand and beautiful time for our country. May love abound to all.

Wow.....did this realm offend you that much?

I see Trump as the product of the Reagan 80s. That’s when he really made it big, and he’s seen our decline since the day he left office.

I would say he’s going to out-work Reagan BECAUSE he wants to just get the nation back to those times.

True... but it HAS to be! Trump walked into the WH facing a much worse and a much more urgent situation.

Trump does NOT have a moment to lose in getting it done right and sending a message that his campaign was NOT just words and media hype!!

It's a new day and a new Presidency.

Trump is used to the constant scrutiny of his every move and every word. That's good. The WH environment and the Presidency won't go to his head.

On the other hand, that simpleton, “O”, suffered from near terminal vertigo from the moment he was ‘nominated’ for the candidacy right through 8 excruciating years.

I think the key to understanding Trump is he has said he rewards those who are loyal to him and attacks those who attack him. He may have used the Republican party to win the Presidency but he also knows conservatives were often there from the beginning for him. He rewards those who propelled him to where he is now and doesn’t forget.

Regarding the speed with which Trump is acting, we should also give reasonable credit to the previous White House occupant, and his party.

The way, without law, that so much was accomplished has now opened the way for changes to be made pronto.
