“......In most free states you can use deadly force to protect yourself or someone else from death or injury. Most reasonable people believe that you can use your firearm to stop a serious crime that has the potential to harm someone..........”

Absolutely true, but the key is “when can you use deadly force?

His actions show that he didn't feel his life was in immediate danger, otherwise he would have fired his weapon.

In many jurisdictions you loose the right to a claim of self-defense, if you escalate a confrontation by drawing a deadly force weapon. And that is probably what happened in the mind of the jury.

If someone comes at you with a knife and drops the knife and backs off when you pull your gun you probably shouldn't shoot.

We see no video of the mob so you have no idea what they were doing. Maybe brandishing knives, clubs, molotov coctails?

Obviously he was in fear or he wouldn't keep backing away.

He was probably convicted because Seattle is a liberal black hole where the Left reigns ascendant.

I would like to see the video that he shot, if any.

Hopefully an appeal will be granted and a change of venue to Eastern OR.

I love the armchair commandos yelling, "He unholstered his gun...so there should be DEAD BODIES everywhere!" as if mobs are predictable and rational.
He was likely threatened, he protected himself, they backed-off, and he holsters his pistol. That is ideally how it happens.
Thugs consider they might get ventilated and opt to not attack an innocent bystander. Sounds perfect.
