McCain has a pathological hatred of Putin, maybe of all Russia
It would not surprise me that he would do anything- anything- and find fellow conspirators both American and foreign - to sabotage Trump’s efforts to ease tensions and build a relationship with Russia
Remember it was McCain who forwarded the “golden shower” dossier to the FBI while acting all righteous that he didn’t k now if it was true or not (he just wanted it leaked, so to speak)
I think the Russians know more about what McCain did in North Vietnam than we have ever been told - they may have had a hand in exploiting him
