I thought “pivo” is Russian for beer.

Anyway, before 1917 electric lighting in Russia was still a novelty to some. Officers gathered in a ballroom or somewhere and when the vodka was in, the lights went out whereupon they drew their revolvers and fired wildly in all directions in the darkness.

When the lights came back on, usually there were no casualties. But small wonder that in those days Russians were often called “baptized bears”.
