The other drug that goes bad reliably is nitroglycerine in tablet form.

Does that mean the nitro I got in 2011 after my heart attack is no good?

...also for some light entertainments...have a look on youtube for the MRE reviews...

While I was serving in the Navy in about 1962 I was working on evaluating and reconditioning old life rafts on my ship. We found some WWII vintage emergency survival ration packs from the early 40s. Cans of a Spam-type meat, crackers of a hardtack substance, soft candies and 10-packs of cigarettes.

Everything was still edible, and the smokes were potent.

I’ve noticed that dairy products last much longer now than they did 20 or so years ago.

Maybe the refrigeration is more dependable?

I don’t think that’s it; I think they’re processing and packaging things better. (I’ve noticed, for instance, that if I keep cheese wrapped/in contact with it’s original wrapper, it keeps far better than if I remove it and put it into a ‘baggie’.)

Article is bull.

As a Pharmaceutical subject matter expert, 38 years in the business, the general public has no clue about pharma manufacturing and the regulatory hurdles we have to meet.

Using media beyond their expiration dates is dangerous to your health care and whatever illness you have may not be treated correctly.

Active ingredients and excipients degrade over time. Period.

The degradants may be harmful variations of the original ingredient.
And not only the active ingredients age, so do the container components. The glass, synthetic rubber stoppers and even the stainless steel needles age over time.

Stability data on the active drug is submitted with the original application to the regulatory agency . The US has the FDA while the EU, Japan and other countries have similar regulatory agencies that approve the submissions.

One approved, the MFG must continue nuke to put their drugs up on
stability stations at room temp and higher temps to accelerate the going process. These data are submitted at least annually, more frequently in the cases of new drugs or upon Regulatory direction.

Upon review, regulators may require decreased expiry dates based on real time data. Biologicals may have th shortest expiry dates because they are protein based while simple drugs and medical devices might be labeled with expirations up to 5 years.

Medical devices and combinations of injectables and devices in a single kit are limited by the contents of the kit, where the single product with shortest dating rules the dating.

Finally, the drug package must function correctly to allow the drug to be dispensed to the patient. Stoppers still have to let needles get through without fragmenting. Springs and plastic parts still have to work in auto-injectors without causing pain at injection site.

Is the health of your family member worth using an expired material, getting no therapeutic action resulting in even more trauma?

I am in charge of first aid where I work. When OTC and very limited prescription drugs we have expire I take them home and put them in my preps. I’ll take them without blinking an eye.
