If he was a spook (which I think is a big if), he may not have sacrificed himself, he may have been sacrificed.
I don't think the CIA angle is plausible, but if there is any connection to the CIA, I would be it is more in the realm of him being a CIA groupie. He maybe knew a couple guys who did some work with the CIA through his government contacts or his Filipino stuff. Maybe he wanted to play CIA and ended up getting played as a patsy.
