I read an article maybe 40 years ago about a kid who was out hunting with his single shot .22. This was in Kansas and he fortunately was near to the only tree in the area.

After a bit, his Mother sensed that something was wrong. She and his Father mounted horses and rode out to check on him. Before they got to him a pack of dogs attacked them. Fortunately both were armed with hand guns and began shooting dogs.

The dogs broke off the attack and they found the kid in the tree. There was a single dead dog under the tree. The kid had his rifle but dropped his ammo while climbing the tree.

The next day they found several dead dogs tho the only one which had been killed immediately was the one under the tree.

Dogs in packs are far more dangerous than coyotes. They will attack livestock, pets, people without hesitation. No fear of people and pack mentality is dangerous. People will dump dogs in the country thinking someone will take them in, when a pack forms the dogs have to be shot or they will become dangerous and destructive.
