Song was written by Bill and Kathy Danoff who lived in DC at the time, and should have looked a map... cause they was close. Hats off to WV-ians— they are tough resourceful people who have been put through a lot, courtesy of John. D. Rockefeller. He was asked about that many times. He was well aware of the map, but "Western Virginia" doesn't work very well in the tune so he decided to take liberties with the geography.
Today he'd have to recenter the song on I-81 and heavy truck traffic.
