Folks it's not often that we get a firearm that we’re excited about, and that we feel like falls in an innovative category. Let’s face it: Everybody’s making an AR-15, a lot of people are making 1911s, and a lot of people are not making striker-fire handguns. This particular weapon, and we’re gonna call it a weapon, we’re gonna call it a firearm, because it’s not a shotgun even though it resembles one.
What we’re gonna be doing is, we’re gonna do a review on this thing, because it classifies by the ATF’s definition as a firearm. Again, it’s not a shotgun, even though it shoots 12-gauge 2 3/4 inch shotgun shells. We’re gonna take a real close look at this thing. Our boy Eric Lemoine over at Black Aces Tactical was kind enough to send us one, we’re gonna take a nice hard look at it, and we’re gonna explain to you guys why this is actually a firearm, not a shotgun.
Now let’s get the confusing stuff out of the way. Again, this firearm is not a shotgun, it is not a short-barrel shotgun, it’s not a short-barrel rifle, it’s not a short-barrel pistol. Again, it is a firearm. That is what it’s classified as.
The important thing to remember is that Eric Lemoine over at Black Aces Tactical designed this thing from scratch in its current state. In other words, it is not a modified firearm, shotgun, rifle, or anything else. It was designed from the ground up as you see it, therefore it never had an original classification of a shotgun, rifle, pistol, or anything like that. That being said, it was never fit with a stock. Given that it’s never been fit with a stock, the ATF does not classify this as a shotgun, and therefore it’s not an NFA item. If it fires shotgun shells, it is a shotgun. No matter what the action, and no matter what it looks like.

“Not a NFA firearm.” Neither was the street sweeper until the ATF ruled that it was. Any firearm with a bore larger than .50 inch can be classified as a “destructive device” if the ATF decides that it is not suitable for “sporting purposes.”
Once the bump stocks are banned, the next to go will be the ‘arm braces’ that can double as shoulder stocks.
States really need to start nullifying the NFA and GCA. I mean, there’s not much the feds could do about it on their own. Case in point - marijuana legalization laws.

In casual, historical and layman’s terms, YES.
But, in this conversation, it’s how the ATF technical branch and the LAW sees it.

Is a Taurus Judge a shotgun?
I can’t see why the author would be so excited about this weapon, or the relevance of firearm vs. shotgun. Who cares?
Trying to think of an application for a shotgun-level recoil, with little real estate to hang on to and difficulty to aim. Short barrel home defense? Conceal carry (LOL)?
Would think a Remington Tac 14 or a Mossberg 590 Shockwave would be more suitable, but for me, until I need to defend my stagecoach from Black Bart and his gang I think I’ll defend Miss Daisy just fine with my regular stock 870.
According to Wikipedia, the Judge is officially classified revolvashotshellshooter, unless you plug in 45 long Colt - then it’s a makemydayevolver. It goes on to say something about a punk not feeling very lucky.
I’d buy that for a dollar! lol
An 18” shotgun is pretty handy. And you can put the long barrel on for hunting.
I get annoyed with how bad the writing is on the blog.

Not legally.
The agency classifies it as a “handgun.” Same with S&W’s Governor. Both have rifled barrels.
Smoothbore handguns are “controlled” items under the NFA and must be registered to allow legal possession. Just what “threat” they posed to the public, to get them onto the controlled-items list, is not clear. Relying on overheated activists to write gun legislation was not a good idea in the 1930s, and it’s no better today.
Just wait until another anti-gun president is elected.
The Judge is a .45 cal Long Colt revolver...
.410 shells just happen to fit into it.
