Diversity Fail? All-Women Engineering Team Blamed for Collapse of Miami Pedestrian Bridge
SandraRose.com ^ | March 18, 2018 | Sandra Rose

The all-women engineering team that designed the ill-fated pedestrian foot bridge at Miami’s Florida International University were highly touted for their advances in a field that is typically dominated by men.

But critics are pointing the finger of blame at the female engineers for design flaws that may have brought the bridge down.

Investigators are still on the scene of last week’s bridge collapse that killed 6 people and injured 9 on the FIU campus in Southwest Miami.

The investigation is focusing on the work done by a team of all-women engineers who were employed by one of the construction firms that designed and built the bridge.

Munilla Construction Management (MCM), the South Miami-based firm that designed the FIU foot bridge, has been sued multiple times for unsafe practices in the past.

In early March MCM was sued by a construction worker who was severely injured when MCM’s “makeshift bridge” at Miami’s International Airport collapsed.

MCM is a Cuban-American, family-owned Miami company founded in 1983 that employs more than 1,000 people in several states. The company is a federal military contractor for the U.S. Army and Navy.

MCM was awarded the $14.2 million minority contract to design and build the cable-stayed bridge. The company is well-connected in Miami politics and it promotes inclusion and diversity in the workforce.

article is completely full of bullshit”

1. Flores wasn’t involved with the bridge, much less the “team leader”:

https://news.fiu.edu/2018/03/community-gathers-to-watch-950-ton-bridge-move-across-southwest-8th-street/120395

2. “Studies all over the world have shown that boys and men are twice as good at math as girls and women”

uh, yeah. studies. all over the world. and yet not a single one is cited. BTW, what exactly does it mean to be “twice as good” at math, anyway?

You get what you pay for.

They paid for diversity, that’s what they really wanted.

Because they will never report it.

Which is the most serious problem this nation faces. Censorship of facts which the public needs to make sensible voting choices is damaging our elections. This is how that complete idiot Barack Obama got elected.

If a Republican presidential candidate was accused of being a homosexual patronizing "Man's Country" gay club in Chicago, it would have been reported on all the news services. Had Barack Obama been a republican, they would have reported his drug use, his lying on his bar exam, his incompetence in attempting to write a book, his laziness when he worked for that law firm in Chicago, his inability to even manage his own money, and they would have demanded proof that he was actually born in this country.

I'm using stupid Barry as an example, but they hide facts about all sorts of people and all sorts of issues. The Mainstream Media simply won't report information that makes Democrats look like the corrupt, sick imbeciles that they are.

And this needs to be stopped. We need to remove their ability to prevent news from getting to the public.

I want to know how anyone thinks putting up a span of a cable stayed bridge, without the central tower and cables being there first to hold the load, is a safe, workable idea.

And I am an engineer.

The design team was inspired by the classic hit “London Bridges Falling Down.”

You have to look at their design partner team members. MCM was the builder side of a JV with a designer who supposedly had specialized in this ABC technique.

I appreciate your input, despite our testy start. Would you prefer your Eng-Tips blog over USA Today?

Do you have any reason to doubt the accuracy of this quote from the latter:

Robert Accetta, the National Transportation Safety Board investigator in charge, said diagonal elements between the bridge’s canopy and deck worked like a truss bridge. But the cables designed to fan out from the column weren’t needed to support the bridge deck, he said.

“As I understand it, these were cosmetic,” Accetta said. “They were not structural members.”

If the quote looks OK to you, maybe you can correct the speculation you cited. For those in the peanut gallery (who I in no way connect to you), this means the pedestal was decorative. One more hint for the unwashed - decorative elements aren't designed to carry structural loads. So they could have included gargoyles in the design and except for their own dead weight, would have no structural affect.

They must have used feminist science and math.

No, I would NOT believe anything written in USA Today.
Politics, energy, engineering, construction codes, structural systems, design, material, machining, foundations, concrete, steel, demolition, electrical systems? Would I trust any writer covering those matters at USA Today either? No.

Yes - I will believe the experts discussing this issue at Eng-Tips.com.

Preaching to the choir!

I've given up on mainstream media completely. I even cut my cable. It's useless to me.

Social media may be our salvation but liberals have a major foothold there as well. But I am encouraged with the growing conservative presence there. I've opened Twitter and Reddit accounts over the past year in addition to this site. My time online is limited due to work demands but since I no longer have TV, this is how I spend most of my free time.

Again, I think mainstream media is a lost cause. Even FoxNews bends the knee way too much.

For example, do you realize what is going on in the Middle East? Saudi Arabia (GCC) and Israel are teaming up to fight terrorism together. In Syria during February, the United States along with local allies annihilated several hundred Russian commandos - almost to a man! But you never hear that in mainstream media because 1) they don't want to give any credit to Trump and 2) they are 100% focused on trying to remove Trump from office at all costs.

I remember reading "1984" by George Orwell as a high school kid. I never dreamed that I would live to see such a scenario play out in America.

de-centering Western civilization

that seems to be a recurrent theme in educators' bios these days. And we let them access young minds. Why is that?

Ah - and what would be a bigger “Deconstruction” than having the bridge they designed collapse -before it was even officially opened no less - I get it now - thanks......

"There is some seriously bad logic going on here to imply that gender played any role in this, when you consider that nearly all of the failures of bridges, buildings, dirigibles, airliners, etc down through history were likely designed by all male engineering teams"

not to mention all the mass murderers.....

but I've come to realize that there are a number of freepers who are homos or have very small male parts and take any opportunity to show their superiority....

Yes, I understand structural drawings quite well.

What part of “It was a politically-funded project, built by political donors, designed by a (sexist-diversified) politically-correct “team”, constructed for a politically-connected donor company, for a politically connected congressional district. It fell down, people got killed.” do you not understand?
